DIVORCE OUTSIDE CANADA
Marriage After a Divorce Outside of Canada
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization to be remarried in Ontario
from the Office of the Registrar General before a marriage licence can be issued. The following
documents must be forwarded to: Office of the Registrar General, Attn: Marriage Office, PO Box
4600, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6L8.
Marriage Licence Application, completed and signed by both applicants (attached)
Statement of Sole Responsibility form, signed and witnessed (attached)
An original or court-certified copy of the Divorce Certificate, Divorce Decree or
Annulment. If the document is in a language other than English or French, include
a translated copy together with an affidavit sworn by a certified translator.
A legal opinion from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both applicants to the
marriage, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in
the Province of Ontario.
A suggested format for a lawyer's opinion letter is currently available from the
Office of the Registrar General (1-800-461-2156) and will be provided directly to
your Ontario Lawyer.
The application must be submitted a minimum of four weeks prior to the date of the ceremony.
