Marriage After a Divorce Outside of Canada
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization to be remarried in Ontario
from the Office of the Registrar General before a marriage licence can be issued. The following
documents must be forwarded to: Office of the Registrar General, Attn: Marriage Office, PO Box
4600, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6L8.
• Marriage Licence Application, completed and signed by both applicants (attached)
• Statement of Sole Responsibility form, signed and witnessed (attached)
• An original or court-certified copy of the Divorce Certificate, Divorce Decree or
Annulment. If the document is in a language other than English or French, include
a translated copy together with an affidavit sworn by a certified translator.
• A legal opinion from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both applicants to the
marriage, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in
the Province of Ontario.
• A suggested format for a lawyer's opinion letter is currently available from the
Office of the Registrar General (1-800-461-2156) and will be provided directly to
your Ontario Lawyer.
The application must be submitted a minimum of four weeks prior to the date of the ceremony.
