General Rules and Guidelines
OVERVIEW
The 4-H Fashion Show is designed to showcase the work of 4-H members who have completed a
Fashion and Interior Design project. The following objectives are included in the Fashion and Interior
Design project: knowledge of fibers and fabrics, wardrobe selection, clothing construction,
comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, understanding of style, good grooming, poise in front
of others, and personal presentation skills.
PURPOSE
The Fashion Show provides an opportunity for 4-H members.
Demonstrate skills and knowledge of clothing construction and consumerism.
Demonstrate an understanding of fashion trends of young people.
Design and create outfits for specific uses.
Demonstrate poise and confidence.
Increase personal presentation skills.
FASHION SHOW BUYING AND CONSTRUCTION
4-H Fashion Show is an optional activity. Senior 4-H members who have competed and won at the
district Fashion Show can compete at the Fashion Show during Texas 4-H Roundup. Each district may
send one senior level contestant from each of the four construction categories (Everyday Living,
Refashion, Semi-formal to Formal, and Theatre/Costume) and one contestant from each of the four
buying categories (Business/Interview, Fantastic Fashion under $25, Semi-formal to Formal, and
Special Interest) to the Texas 4-H Roundup Fashion Show.
PARTICIPANT RULES for TEXAS 4-H STATE FASHION SHOW
The rules in this guide are for the Texas 4-H State Fashion Show held in conjunction with the Texas
4-H Roundup. Please refer to county and district Fashion Show guidelines for information on those
contests.
Failure to comply with the requirements will result in disqualification or penalty deductions from the
final score.
1. Age. Age divisions are determined by a participant’s age as of August 31 of the current 4-H
year in accordance with what is stated in the current Texas 4-H Rules and Guidelines. Junior
and Intermediate divisions will follow district Fashion Show guidelines.
Senior Division: Grades 9 thru 12
2. Participation. Participants must complete a 4-H Fashion and Interior Design project between June
2023, and the district contest in the 2023-2024 4-H year. All garments/ensembles to be judged
must have been purchased (renting a garment is not allowed in the buying division) or

constructed during participation in a 4-H Fashion & Interior Design project between June 2023,
and the district contest in the 2023-2024 4-H year.
3. Fashion Show Construction & Buying Categories. Fashion Show Construction categories include
Everyday Living, Refashion, Semi-formal to Formal, and Theatre/Costume. Buying categories
include Business/Interview, Fantastic Fashion under $25, Semi-formal to Formal, and Special
Interest. The 4-H member must select either construction or buying and then select a category.
Participants must compete in the same category at the district and state level. The entry worn at
district must be the entry at the state contest. Accessories such as shoes, jewelry, hat, gloves, and
scarfs may be changed, but changes must be included on the paperwork. The appropriate
garment category should be determined by the style, fabric, and use of the garment. No one
may change divisions or categories between district and state contests.
4. Participants may compete in Fashion Show Construction or Buying and Fashion Show Natural
Fiber. Participants may compete in a Fashion Show Buying or Construction category and in a
Fashion Show Natural Fiber wool/mohair or cotton category at the Texas 4-H Roundup if they
finished first at the district contest in their respective categories. Participants may enter the same
garment, or they may enter different garments based on the individual category guidelines.
5. Participation in Fashion Show activities during Texas 4-H Roundup. Participants must be present
for all Texas 4-H Fashion Show activities including interview, dress rehearsal, and public Fashion
Show. Fashion Show orientation will be held virtually. A link will be provided prior to the 4-H
Roundup, and it is the responsibility of the participant to view the orientation. A complete
schedule including fashion show practice, interview times and public fashion show will be
distributed to all registered Fashion Show qualifiers after 4-H Roundup registration is complete.
6. Fashion Show Registration and Paperwork. 4-H Fashion Show guidelines and entry forms can be
found on the Texas 4-H Fashion and Interior Design webpage
. Contestants qualifying for the
State 4-H Fashion Show complete the required entry forms and register on Texas 4-H Online.
Participants will upload their entry form during the registration process. If a participant is
competing in construction or buying and natural fiber submit paperwork for both contests in one
merged document.
7. Alternates. An alternate cannot participate in the state 4-H Fashion Show unless approved by the
district 4-H Specialist and contest superintendent is notified prior to Roundup registration closing.
It is imperative that the contest superintendent be notified as soon as possible to update the
interview schedule, program, and other changes.
TEXAS 4-H FASHION SHOW INTERVIEW PROCEDURE
1. Introduction/Presentation
Each contestant will start by introducing themselves and model their garment for the judges.
Participants will then provide a 5-minute presentation to the judges. During the presentation,
the participants need to describe their project activities, outfit selection, construction or

buying skills and their knowledge of fiber and fabrics. Prior to competing the participant
should review the contest score sheet to see the areas that will be judged.
2. Question and Answer
Judges will have the opportunity to ask each participant questions from the list of contest
questions as well as questions related directly to the participants garment or project
experiences.
FASHION SHOW NATIONAL CONTEST OPPORTUNITY
National contest for Fashion Show is the 4-H FCS National Championship Fashion Revue held in San
Antonio. Texas can send up to four individuals to attend this national contest. All category (buying,
construction and natural fiber) first place winners will have the opportunity to compete to earn one of
the four spots. Guidelines for competing for a spot at the National 4-H Fashion Revue will be shared with
the participants in an e-mail prior to the Texas 4-H Roundup Fashion Show.

CONSTRUCTION
1. Garments may be constructed by sewing, knitting, or crocheting. Accessories may be purchased.
2. All garments worn (garments that are visible i.e., blouse under jacket or vest) during the interview
process must be constructed. Close-fitting legwear, tights, and pantyhose do not need to be
constructed.
3. In Construction, first place winners may enter the same category in which they have previously
been awarded a firstplace entry at State, unless they have competed at the National Fashion
Revue. See related rule in the 2024 4-H Roundup guide.
CATEGORY DESCRIPTION
Everyday Living
Includes casual sportswear, weekend-wear, sleepwear, clothing for
school, casual after- school events, or hanging out with friends
Refashion
Refashion is an environmentally friendly category where old, worn out or
damaged textile items are upcycled into something new. The result of
modifying existing clothing or fabric item (such as tablecloth or curtain) into
something more fashionable. Participants will use creativity and sewing skills
to bring life to something that would have ended up in the landfill. The
completed garment is different from its original use, not just an alteration.
(Examples: neck ties sewn together to form a dress or taking old t-shirts and
making them into a skirt)
Semi-formal to
Formal
Entry must be designed for semi-formal to formal occasions and made
from fabrics intended for the same.
Semi-formal is a little less formal than formal black tie.
Womenincludes midi-dresses, maxi-dresses, wrap dresses, cocktail
dresses, pantsuits, and jumpsuits.
Menincludes slacks and a blazer, a two-piece suit (with or without
a tie), accessories that show personal style (pocket squares, dress
watch, custom shoes).
Formal -prom, evening wedding or gala party.
Women typically floor-length gown, a knee-length cocktail dress
or classic little black dress.
Men two or three-piece suit or tuxedo, with a shirt and tie.
Theatre/Costume
Garment intended for use as a costume, which would include stage
production. May be sewn from fabric or using a base garment to build
upon. These garments may be unusual or innovative materials; imaginative
but wearable.

The 2024 Texas 4-H Fashion Construction Entry Form is required for participants in the 2024 Texas 4-H Fashion
Show.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Fashion Show construction judging is based on the 2024 Fashion Show Construction Score Sheet. A
panel of judges will evaluate and score the entries based on their Fashion Show paperwork and
interview.
Participants will provide a presentation up to 5 minutes in length. Each category will be judged
separately. A participant receives a 5-point deduction for not following all Fashion Show requirements,
which includes not completing all forms or illegible or incorrect forms.
If ties should occur, the ties will be broken using partial scores in the following order.
1. Construction skills
2. Outfit Selection, fit and appearance
3. Interview
4. Knowledge of fiber and fabric
characteristics

Business/
Interview Attire
Entry should be an outfit you would wear for a job interview, scholarship interview,
job fair, or other professional event.
1. Professional This is a more traditional, conservative approach (e.g., business
suit or blazer, tie, and dress slacks for men, business suit, pantsuit, or jacket and
dress for women).
2. Business Casual This trend is more relaxed and comfortable but demonstrates
good judgment in choices and displays a neat appearance (e.g., polo shirt,
shirt with a collar or sweater, khakis or other slacks, dress or casual leather shoes,
moderate length dress or skirt for women).

antastic
Fashions
under $25
This category is designed to expand the 4-H member’s shopping experience to
include different shopping venues. Outfits must be purchased at a garage sale,
consignment store, Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other retail business. Receipts are
required for everything that is visible during the interview, except shoes. Receipts for
garage sales can be handwritten. This includes jewelry and accessories.
Semi-Formal to
Formal
Entry must be designed for semi-formal to formal occasions and made from fabrics
intended for the same.
