Administrative/biographical history
Fitzalan High School was formed in 1968 from Fitzalan Technical High School
for Boys and a number of other schools. Until 1951 technical education was
confined to groups of pupils in Cathays and Howard Gardens High Schools for
Boys but in that year a Technical Department was established in Viriamu
Jones Secondary Modern School with an intake of three forms, expanded to
six in 1952. Fitzalan was opened as a new separate technical school in 1953
in the old Howard Gardens School buildings which had been built in 1895 and
severely damaged by bombs in 1941. Fitzalan acquired new premises on the
present site in Lawrenny Avenue in 1964. The introduction of comprehensive
secondary school education in the 1960s led to the creation of Fitzalan High
School based on the pre-existing Technical High School with the addition of
secondary pupils from Kitchener Girls, Severn Road, Ninian Park Girls and
Boys, and Market Road High, Canton.
