Greenleaf Commission: This Commission advises the City of Livonia,
its citizens and businesses on the areas of sustainability. Our mission
is to encourage energy efficiency, conservation, and environmentally
friendly practices.

Engaged, informed citizens are
key to a sustainable city. After urging
by the Greenleaf Commission, Livonia joined the
Nextdoor for Public Agencies network in October. This
allows the City to share information and updates with
neighborhoods that use Nextdoor neighborhood sites.
In June 2017, there were almost 7,000 residents using
Nextdoor in 70 Livonia neighborhoods. Livonia is among
more than 1,500 communities in the U.S. using Nextdoor
to engage residents.

Livonia is in the process of updating its Master Plan
for the city. This long-range planning effort will focus
on many important issues, including community
sustainability. Greanleaf Commission members are
participating in the process of producing a document
that commits Livonia to the long-term vitality of our
constructed and natural environment.
To learn more, please visit the Greenleaf Commission
page on the City of Livonia website and the Greenleaf
Commission on Sustainability Facebook page. For

Check out our
Performance
Residents are invited to look over a chart comparing
Livonias measurable statistics on our Performance
Dashboard. (Look for the dark red icon under Links
at 666$*38/',*5/.*".&3).
The chart there compares year-to- year data in areas
grouped as Fiscal Stability, Public Safety, Economic
Strength, and Quality of Life. The information is
compiled by various departments several months after
the end of each year and published in accordance with
State of Michigan revenue sharing requirements.
Some negatives were recorded in recent comparisons:
A slight increase in accidents per thousand and an
increase in water and sewer breaks.
Among the positive highlights for the most recent
comparisons are a decline in the number of fire
incidents per thousand, an increase in the average
market value of residential property, and an increase
in percentage of roads rated as good or excellent.

They keep saying great
things about Livonia
There’s a saying: “When
youre good at something,
you tell other people.
But when you’re great at
something, they’ll tell you.
Judging by thingsthey” are saying about Livonia
in recent months, there’s a lot thats great
about our
community!
First, we had one of the biggest online real estate
search engines, Realtor.com, tell us that Livonia has
been the second-hottest real estate market in the
entire country for millennials in 2017.
They measured this by looking at zip codes and
found that homes in Livonia’s 48154 get looked at a lot
and sell like crazy, which is something anyone shopping
for a new home in Livonia knows first-hand.
They also tell us why Livonia is so popular with
young home buyers, too. Millennials like affordable
areas with strong job markets, low unemployment and
high salaries that are close to hiking trails, great
restaurants and nightlife, they say.
Livonia certainly does have lots of great parks,
a very low unemployment rate, strong public
safety, and quick freeway access to a resurging
Detroit entertainment district. We also think
events like December’s Merry & Bright Holiday
Parade, which drew rave reviews from many
residents, will only add to our popularity
among young families. Don’t think we won’t
do that again!
Another example of others saying great things
about us?
No community in the state has better
firefighting ability than Livonia does. Thats
the word of an independent agency called
Insurance Services Office (ISO) that conducted
an extensive, 18-month evaluation.
The report showed Livonia was one of
four Michigan cities to earn the top rating.
They looked at every aspect that goes into
effective firefighting from the initial call to
emergency dispatch, to well-trained and
equipped firefighters, to providing good water
flow at fire hydrants.

(Above) Aerial look at the Merry & Bright
Holiday Parade. (Left) Mayor Wright and

This information makes me proud of our fire-fighters,
our water department and our dispatchers. But it’s more
than the security of knowing our firefighting is the best.
It’s also the possibility that some residents and
businesses may see reduced insurance rates when the
new rating takes effect in March.
And finally, here are a couple more examples of others
saying great things about Livonia:
Think about it. Livonia has been named one of the
nations Top 100 Places to Start a Business, by a
company called HowtoStartanLLC.com. They listed
Livonia as the second-best place for businesses to
open up shop in the entire state of Michigan.
Livonia is also among the Top 100 Best Cities to
Raise Kids in the Nation, according to the National
Council for Home Safety and Security. The study
looked at graduation rates, median household
income, violent crime statistics and number of
children insured. This rating fits right in with our
Families First” motto.
I guess I don’t have to tell you how great Livonia is
they” have been doing it for me.

All residential property in the City of Livonia
is being reviewed by the Livonia Assessing
Department to ensure the accuracy of our records.
The staff doing the review will visit every home
in the City and, if possible, speak with the
homeowner of the property. The staff will be
identified with City logo shirts and photo ID.
If the owner is not available, staff will compare
the record card to the exterior of the house.
He or she may also look in the back yard.

The presence of rats, mice, squirrels, skunks and other vermin are nothing new.
They share our space and have always been around – sometimes more
widespread, sometimes less.
To thrive, these rodents need two things available to them:
1. Food source (and water).
2. Shelter.
Food Source Rats and vermin feed on the following:
1. Pet food left outside, or made accessible in a garage or shed.
2. Pet waste – yes, pet waste, not cleaned up is a food source for rats.
3. Bird feeders, squirrel food, bread, peanuts, popcorn etc. Much of that food
put out for the “friends” you enjoy, winds up feeding rats and vermin.
4. Home vegetable gardens.
5. Household trash put out overnight in bags (instead of solid trash cans).
6. Check your plastic garbage cans to see if there is a small entry hole on the
bottom for vermin. Rats are unable to enter metal cans with secured lids.
Shelter Rats and vermin will make a home in:
1. Debris, wood on the ground, trash, tires, building materials.
2. Accessory buildings or garages or slabs without rat wall protection – they can
burrow under the slab and create a rat or vermin “hotel.
3. Skirted decks and decks low to the ground – while they may be attractive,
these decks can also provide living space for critters.
4. Holes in your foundation, home, garage or shed that lets them “bunk” with
you.
Take away the food and shelter and the rats and vermin will not come around.
Just a reminder that homeowners/residents are responsible for the
extermination of rats from their property.
If there is an infestation, either a professional exterminator must be
utilized – or the rat infestation must be exterminated using approved
methods which will not be injurious to human health. You do not want the
vermin to go elsewhere.
All structures and exterior property areas must be kept free from rat
infestation.
After extermination, proper precautions must be taken to prevent re-
infestation.
Call Ordinance Enforcement for further information or if you wish to report a
problem at (734) 466-2588.

Snow Plowing Operations: Most major roads in Livonia are
maintained by Wayne County.
Parked Vehicles: All parked motor vehicles/trailers must be removed
from the roadway within six (6) hours of the declaration and notification
of a snow alert (emergency) or the vehicle is subject to ticketing and/or
towing (Livonia Code of Ordinances 10:63:060). (The Department of
Public Works will attempt to maximize the notification time beyond six
hours whenever possible based on all available weather data. The City
of Livonia media outlets listed above will indicate the time of the
declaration/notification of a snow emergency and a deadline time that
parked vehicles/trailers must be removed from the roadway).
Snow at the End of Driveways: Snow buildup at the end of
driveways will occur as the result of snow plowing operations. This is
unavoidable as the result of clearing the roadway. You may help to
alleviate some of the snow accumulation by clearing the area to your
left (facing the street) before the snowplow arrives. Depositing snow in
the roadway from shoveling/snow blowing the driveway is prohibited
and will only result in the snow being pushed back into the driveway.
The City is not able to return and clear individual driveways and is
unable to prevent snow deposits at the end of over 39,000 driveways
city-wide.
Mailboxes: Curbside mailboxes may become blocked by plowed snow
and the U.S. Postal Service has a policy regarding access to mailboxes,
which requires snow to be removed enough to allow the mail truck to
drive up to and reach into the mailbox for delivery. Clearing the
mailbox to allow for service is the responsibility of the postal customer.
During snow plowing operations mailboxes can become damaged by
the weight of the snow thrown by the plow. Check your mailbox before
each winter and “shake your mailbox” to see if it is sturdy enough to
make it through the winter season or is in need of repair.
Fire Hydrants: Fire hydrants should be cleared of snow. Time can
make all the difference in an emergency and having the hydrant visible
and accessible for the Fire Department will greatly aid in their efforts.
Safety: When driving, keep a safe distance from snow plow trucks.
When your street is being plowed, keep children back and away from
the roadway.
Assistance: The elderly and disabled often need help removing
snow from their driveways. Please help if you can. The Livonia
Senior Center maintains a list of contractors for snow removal at
(734) 466-2555.

Guidelines for
Refuse Collection
Weekly trash collection starts at 6 a.m. There is no set time for a
particular street. Trash should not be set out earlier than 6 p.m.
the evening prior to the collection day.
Weekly trash collection is limited to eight (8) cans or bags of
regular household waste and eight (8) cans or bags of yard
waste.
Warning to Parents: Children, through their curious nature, are
attracted to the operation of heavy equipment used in weekly
trash collection. Please instruct your children to keep a safe
distance from all collection vehicles.
Containers:
Containers should be set on the front curb or edge of street but
NOT IN THE ROADWAY ITSELF. Garbage must not be packed
too tightly in containers. All containers must be removed from
the curb by the evening of the collection day.
Acceptable Containers:
Cans: An water-tight galvanized metal or heavy-duty plastic
garbage cans with handles. MAXIMUM SIZE OF THIRTY-THREE
(33) GALLONS. (Loose trash that may blow away [i.e. paper or
packing material] must be disposed of in a plastic bag secured at
the top).
Plastic Bags: 2 mil plastic bags recommended. (Food waste
should not be in bags placed on the ground to discourage
rodents or other wildlife from feeding on scraps).
Paper Bags: Compost bags for disposal of yard waste only.
CONTAINERS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF
FIFTY (50) POUNDS EACH.
Preparing Items for Weekly Pick Up
Cardboard boxes larger that 2 feet by 2 feet must be broken
down and tied in bundles or may be recycled at the Drop-off
Recycle Center.
When disposing of sharp objects, care should be taken to
prevent injury to the refuse collector. Used hypodermic needles
should be placed in a “Sharps” container and sealed before
disposing of. Broken glass should be wrapped securely.
Recycle Bin Collection
Recycling is mandatory in Livonia. To obtain a replacement
recycling bin please contact the Sanitation Division at
(734) 466-2588. For details on what items are recyclable and
accepted at curbside please see page 12.
Large Item Pick Up: Household furnishings and appliances will
be picked up weekly by a separate truck on the regular collection
day. There is a limit of two (2) household items per week. These
items should be set out the evening before (after 6 p.m.) or prior
to 6 a.m. of the collection day. For refrigerator or freezer disposal,
doors must be removed or securely taped shut.
Yard Waste (Compost) Collection
The separated yard waste collection program, on your regular
trash collection day, begins the fourth Monday in March and
ends the second Friday in December. Yard waste must be placed
in paper compost bags or an acceptable container (33-gallon
hard plastic or metal can with handles) marked with an “X” or a
City of Livonia “Yard Waste Recycling” sticker. These stickers can
be obtained by calling the Sanitation Division at (734) 466-2588.
Containers must not exceed 50 pounds in weight. To prevent
injury to the yard waste collector, branches must not overhang the
can. Sanitation crews are not allowed to reach into any can to
remove lodged items. During the winter months there is no
curbside collection service of yard waste. (The Refuse Disposal
Facility will accept yard waste for a fee during the winter months).
Brush and Branch Collection:
There are two methods for disposal of brush and branches at the
curb. (Logs and stumps are not collected at the curb).
Pickup of Small Brush: Branches less than four (4) feet long must
be tied in bundles of less than fifty (50) pounds and placed out on
trash collection day separate from the normal trash and recycling
bin. Up to five (5) bundles of tied brush/branches may be
disposed of weekly. Bundled brush service, on your regular trash
collection day, is available from the fourth Monday in March
through the second Friday in December.
Pickup of Large Brush: Chipper service for branches over four (4)
feet long and less than four (4) inches in diameter is collected
separate from the weekly trash collection. Branches and brush
must be unbundled and placed as close to the road as possible
with cut ends pointing towards the street. Roots, thorns and vines
are prohibited for chipper service. Collection of large brush

Recycling in Livonia
Livonia residents have two options for recycling by using either
the Curbside Recycling Program or the drop-off Recycle Center.
For refuse or yard waste collection, please see the Refuse
Information or Brush Pickup pages on the city website.
Curbside Recycling Program
For curbside recycling, place items curbside in the recycling bin
next to your refuse on your scheduled refuse pick up day. Place
all paper recyclables in brown paper or plastic grocery bags in, on
top of or next to the recycling bin. If you need a recycling bin
replacement or a second bin, you may pick one up from
Sanitation located in the City Hall Annex or the Department of
Public Works Yard located at 12973 Farmington Road, south of
I-96. Items collected include:
Plastic Bottles & Containers marked on the bottom with
the recycle symbol 1 through 7. No Styrofoam. No motor oil
or antifreeze containers.
Clear, Green and Brown Glass Bottles and Jars. No
window glass, ceramics, dishes, drinking glasses, or light
bulbs.
Tin, Aluminum and Empty Aerosol Cans. Only empty
aerosol cans.
Small Scrap Metal Items. Pot, pans and license plates are
acceptable. No clothing hangers.
Plastic Grocery Bags. Stuff bags into single plastic grocery
bag and place in bin when full.
Office, Computer and Loose-Leaf Paper (any color).
Manila Folders with no metal clamps.
Junk Mail (including envelopes with windows).
Glossy Magazines/Catalogs.
Newspapers and inserts.
Telephone Books.
Paperback Books (or donate to the Library for the book
sale).
Brown paper grocery bags.
Boxboard/Paperboard such as cereal and shoe boxes, etc.
No waxed-coated containers such as milk and juice cartons
Corrugated Cardboard and boxes must be cut down to 2’ x
2' and bundled.
Drop-Off Recycling Center
The drop-off Recycling Center is open Monday through Friday
from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Center is located on the south side of Glendale Ave.
approximately 1/2 mile east off of Farmington Rd. between
Schoolcraft and Plymouth roads.
In addition to the items listed below for Curbside recycling,
the Drop-Off Center accepts:
• Larger pieces of Corrugated Cardboard.
• Vehicle and household batteries.
• Oil and antifreeze.
• Larger scrap metal such as frames, folding chairs, etc.
Tips to Reduce Waste
• Learn to recognize "avoidables" - anything you cannot
recycle or reuse, for example disposable razors, paper
plates and napkins.
• Purchase items packaged in recyclable material and
avoid items packaged in non-recyclable packaging like
Styrofoam.
• Avoid over-packaging. $1 for every $10 spent at the
grocery store is spent on packaging. Buying items in bulk
saves money, saves trips to the store, and greatly
reduces packaging.
• Switch to a reusable grocery bag or choose paper
grocery bags instead of plastic.
• Reuse plastic containers that are not recyclable such as
plastic tubs.
• Reuse the bags for your next shopping trip.
• Donate or sell reusable garments, repairable appliances,
and furniture to organizations.
• Save your egg cartons. In the Spring, reuse them to
plant seedlings. Small farms with chickens often
appreciate egg carton donations.
• Save reusable bows and boxes from the holidays or
birthday and reuse.

The Nankin Mills Schoolhouse was moved to
Greenmead on October 25, 2016. It was originally
located at Farmington Road and Ann Arbor Trail. Henry
Ford built this school for the children of the workers at
his Nankin Mills factory. It opened September 9, 1937.
Foundation work was completed in the fall. The Special
Events at Greenmead raise funds for this restoration
project as well as the preservation of the buildings
currently on the property. Every building has a story to
tell about the past residents of Livonia. If you would like
to make a donation towards this project, please contact
the office at (248) 477-7375 or visit greenmead.us.
Thank you for your support.
