BRIEF HISTORY
In 1961, it was the spirit of idealism that inspired a group of likeminded
residents of D. N. Nagar, Andheri (W) to establish a quality educational
institution. And this resulted in the inception of the Cosmopolitan Education
Society. Under its aegis, the society established the Valia College of
Commerce and Arts in 1986. Today, the college with a total strength of more
than 2500 students offers various graduate and undergraduate programs-
namely Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com), Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting
and Finance) B.Com (A & F), Bachelor of Management Studies
(B.M.S.)Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M) Bachelor of Science(Information
Technology) B.Sc.(IT), Master of Commerce M.Com (Accountancy),Master
of Science (Information Technology).
Over the years, Valia College has grown in strength to achieve a distinctive
reputation. Our efforts are aimed at providing a holistic development of the
student personality which necessarily involves going beyond the
curriculum. At Valia college our responsibility is not confined to the student
community alone, we owe a larger responsibility to the society and the
nation. Our efforts are directed towards creating an environment that
fosters the spirit of equality.

EXPERT LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS
“Are Women Better Borrowers in Micro Finance?” - Prof. Shagata
Mukherjee, Associate Professor from Meghanad Desai Academy of
Economics conducted this session to acquaint the students about
micro finance and how women can start their small businesses.
“Handling Interpersonal Relationships” - Mrs. Janavi Doshi-
Consultant from CSR initiative conducted this session focused on how
to manage our interpersonal skills as the key to happy and successful
life.
“Human Rights within Indian Constitution - Dr. Rashmi Oza,
faculty Department of Law- Mumbai University conducted this session
on the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice in the Indian
Constitution.
“Introduction to Soft Skills- Mrs. Anamika Chakravarty (Life Coach
IIM Alumnus) conducted a webinar to orient the students about the
attributes that the individual will need in order to succeed in the
workplace and how it will help the students to be a better employee.
Understanding the language of Cinema” - Dr. (Mrs.) Michelle Philip
(Head, Dept of English, Wilson College) conducted a session to
introduce the students to the finer nuances and lesser-known aspects
of the craft of the cinema.
“Career Opportunities after the Corona Pandemic” - Dr. Vanita
Joshi, faculty of ICFAI Business School conducted an interactive online
webinar on how the pandemic has led to extensive shift in automation
and redesigning of jobs.
“Financial Literacy among Youth” - Ms. Aditi Chipkar from ICICI
Foundation conducted an online webinar to orient the young adults

management skills.
“Motivation” -An Alumni Connect Activity-Our alumni, Ms. Disha
Pandya from Creative lead, motivational speaker at TEDx and Josh talk
conducted online guest lecture for T.Y.B. Com students, where she
shared her journey of life which was full of hardships and obstacles.
Creativity in Advertising” An Alumni Connect Activity - Prof. Ms.
Megha K. Juvekar our alumni currently faculty at Nirmala Memorial
Foundation College conducted a session to inform the students on how
creativity is the soul of advertising and branding.
“Career Options in Banking” An Alumni Connect Activity - Ms.
Swati Raut, alumni - currently working as a Regional Head for loan
operations with Axis Bank (Pune) conducted a webinar to give insight
regarding the job opportunities in the domain after graduation and
how specialized degrees can make a career in banking services.
“Opportunities in Self Employment” A session was conducted by
CA Prof. Anil .V. Tilak to give insights on various opportunities that one
can consider for self-employment.
“How to file Income Tax Returns’’ CA Prof. Anil. V. Tilak and our
alumni Mr. Akshay Kamat conducted a session to give practical
exposure to T.Y students on how income tax returns are filed on
Income Tax Website.
“Unconventional Careers in Accounts and Commerce” - CA Pranit
Jain conducted a session to orient the students about the plethora of
career opportunities in accounts and commerce.
"How to upgrade professionally while pursuing graduation" - CA
Pranit Jain conducted a session to acquaint the students regarding the

graduation.
“The Dawn of Artificial Intelligence A Boon to the Business
World” - The Department of BMS organized a national level
intercollegiate webinar conducted by Dr. Sunil Lalchandani,
Management Faculty and Trainer at ICSI, on the future of business
with the advent of artificial intelligence.
Introduction to IPR- Exploring the World of Intellectual Property-
Dr. Mrs. Nilima Chandaramani, Principal, Nari Gursahani Law College
was the resource person for this webinar which focused on the
intricacies of intellectual property rights, the various types and how
one can explore the world of creation and invention staying well
within the domains of intellectual property rights.
“Understanding Mutual funds- A Product Perspective” - The
Department of BMS organized a one- day webinar by Mr. Neelratna R
Chowbal, Corporate trainer. The webinar focused on inculcating
knowledge of mutual funds and their functioning.
“Preparation for Project work” A Project work guidance webinar
was organised for TYBAF and TYBMS. The resource person Dr Gopal
Kalkoti, Principal MVM College of Commerce and Science provided
guidance to students on how to write a report.
Mental Wellness’’ - The NSS unit organized a webinar on 'Mental
Wellness' in collaboration with the NGO 'The Movement'.
Fit India Movement Week - An inter-collegiate online poster making
competition was organized and volunteers attended a five-day yoga
online session conducted by Mr. Vivek Jain.
Quiz activity on 'World Food Day' A quiz activity was organized to
create awareness regarding food habits and a healthy diet plan.

Poshan Pakhwada - NSS organized an online diet recipe making
competition and E-Poster making competition based on nutrition. Ms.
Sajida Shaikh, a Post Graduate Diploma in Fitness Nutrition conducted
a webinar on nutrition and fitness. Poshan walk, healthy food
distribution and cycle rally were also conducted during Poshan

SECOND INTERNATIONAL MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE
"EDUCATION, EMPLOYABILITY, AND EXCELLENCE: THE NEW
NORMAL AND BEYOND"
The Research Cell in association with Jeevitam organised the 2nd
International Research Conference on 22nd May 2021. The theme of the
conference was- "EDUCATION, EMPLOYABILITY, AND EXCELLENCE: THE
NEW NORMAL AND BEYOND". Various academicians, paper presenters,
researchers and students attended the conference. The conference was
inaugurated and declared open by Mr. Munish Chawla, Co- founder and Chief
Happiness Officer at Jeevitam & DTrac. The inauguration also had prolific
speakers lined up, with profound research knowledge and development
ideas, along with 4 special international delegates who took time out of their
busy schedules and conflicting time zones and made it for the conference. 76
papers were submitted for publication and were evaluated by the expert
paper reviewers. In the conference, 56 researchers presented their papers
over 4 technical sessions conducted on Zoom and made the conference a
huge success by aiding in the exchange of powerful ideas and knowledge. Of
these 56 research papers, 48 research papers were published in UGC Care
Journal Journal of Education, Rabindra Bharati University, Vol. XXIII, No.
8(II), 2021, ISSN: 0972-7175 in two volumes. Of the rest of the research
papers, 2 were published in Peer-reviewed journal, Scholarly Research
Journals for Humanity Science and English Language.

LIBRARY REPORT
The College has a spacious well-lit, air-conditioned library with number of
facilities spanning over an area of 5000 sq.ft. The library is situated on the
fourth floor of the college building.
Library services are computerized. Complete catalogue of the library
holdings has been created by using MICM, Integrated Library Management
Software. Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is provided to the users.
Two separate computer terminals are provided one for counting footfalls in
the library and another for students for accessing availability of books in the
library. Students are using the OPAC extensively for searching the required
books and journal articles. On an average 600 books per day are circulated
to the readers from Home lending section, Reading Hall, and reference
section of the library. The students extensively use Library Reading Hall and
around 250 students are availing this facility. However in the year 2020-21
due to the pandemic students were not allowed to visit the college and
library.
The college has a very good collection of books including textbooks,
reference books, periodicals, and journals. The total number of books at
present is 20,000 and the college subscribes to 20 journals and newspapers.
The library is open from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on all working days. The
different subject sections are well-displayed, and every student is
encouraged to make the best use of the library and reading room. The library
is equipped with internet facility. The library has an internet leased line with
the speed of 10 MBPS. Cleanliness and maintenance of the library is always
given top priority.

Following are the facilities provided in the library:
Home Lending - The home lending counter is kept open between 9.30
am and 4.30 pm. on all working days. Students and faculties can
borrow books from this counter. Generally students and faculties are
issued two books at a time for a period of one week.
References - The library staff help the readers in finding out their
queries. Readers are also provided with relevant documents in print
and electronic form.
Reading Room - The reading room has a seating capacity of 300 with
separate arrangement for faculty and students.
Special Sections for faculty members separate cubicles are provided
for staff-members to utilise library facilities and for personalised
mentoring and counselling.
Separate section for girl students - Library has a separate seating area
for girl students.
Every year text books and reference books are purchased by taking
prior suggestions from faculty and students.
Internet Facility - All the computers are internet enabled. The library
has 40 nodes with internet connectivity for any computer appliance
where students and faculties can browse internet and online
resources.
E-Resources section - Library has separate e-resources section with
four computers and internet facility, where users can access
INFLIBNET’s N list, Shodhganga, Institutional Repository,
Shodhgangotri and use open access database DOAJ.

Photocopying facility Students and faculty members can avail the
facility of photocopying in the library with the help of a multi-
functional printer capable of printing, scanning, and photocopying.
Book Bank - For one academic year at a time, 60 sets of books to needy
students are given under the scheme of College Book bank and
University Book Bank for economically backward classes.
Newspapers - College is also purchasing eleven daily newspapers for
faculty and students. These newspapers are kept in the Reading Hall
for students and in staff common room for faculty. However as of now
due to the pandemic since students are not physical visiting the library
we have purchased four daily newspapers.
Suggestion box is available for students to make suggestions.
Library is under CCTV surveillance
Fire alarm and fire extinguishers are setup in the library.
Annual Library Report is published in the college magazine Ira.
Annual Book Display/Exhibitions are held on regular basis. However
the same was not held due to the pandemic in the year 2020-21.
The library is fully automated and connected to server through LAN.
Library is using MICM Library Management software from 2010.This
integrated library management system keeps the records of all the
books as well as details of the transaction along with the use of bar
coding. LMS ensures high productivity because of minimal data entry
requirements, maximum possible integration of functions and
sophisticated search facilities. It offers features such as cataloguing,
book transaction, administration, cataloguing, OPAC and patron
records.

E-resources and digital library:
Library has separate E-resources section with four computers and internet
facilities where user can access INFLIBNET’s N list, Shodhganga,
Institutional Repository, Shodhgangotri and also use open access database
DOAJ. In addition to subscribed e-resources such as INFLIB N-list and
authentic free, open source and public domain resources are also provided.
List providing the details of subscribed e-resources displayed in e-resourse
section of the library, labs and notice boards of all departments for the
awareness of students. Library has set up DSpace institutional repository
providing access to old question papers and other documents. Dedicated
systems are available in the library and computer centre to access resources.
Students are allowed to use personal laptops and mobiles also in the library
for academic purpose. Charging points are provided for uninterrupted
use. Separate computer terminals are provided one for counting foot fall in

library.
Book Bank Scheme
Every year books are issued to 20 economically backward students each
from FYBCOM, SYBCOM and TYBCOM through proper applications from
students under the book bank scheme. Even in this adverse situation library
could manage to provide book bank service to the 18 economically backward

students from the degree college of the commerce stream. In this adverse
situation of pandemic, students were not allowed to visit college and use the
library so study material of all subjects were provided to the students on the
Google classroom by all the faculty.
IN THE SERVICE OF SOCIETY
Pulse Polio Rally & Training- NSS organized a rally for Pulse Polio
awareness following Covid-19 guidelines and a training session was
conducted by BMC ward officer at Lokhandwala health post-K/West
ward, Andheri.
Pulse Polio Drive Volunteers participated in the Pulse Polio
immunization campaign at Lokhandwala health post-K/West ward,
Andheri along with BMC officers.
No Smoking Day- No Smoking Day is observed to encourage people to
quit smoking not just for the good, but for good. Students prepared a

“Bottles for Change” - Volunteers attended a webinar on 'Plastic
Recycling' in collaboration with Bisleri International Private Limited
conducted by Ms. Megha Dhuri. Bottles for Change aims to create
awareness among citizens about importance of plastic recycling. The
session ensured on channelizing all kinds of used clean plastic for
recycling to ensure the greener cleaner environment. The 'Bisleri
International Private Limited' Team recorded a video on plastic
collection drive in college.
“Plastic Collection Drive - Volunteers collected plastic from various
homes totaling 58 kgs in three days and handed over to the Bisleri
International Private Limited for recycling purpose. Volunteers urged
the people to reduce consumption of harmful plastic which is damaging
the environment. And to inculcate a positive behavioral change in terms
of reducing plastic waste from our daily use.
“E-Waste Collection Drive”- E-waste, refers to all items of electrical and
electronic equipment (EEE) and its parts that have been discarded by its
owner as waste without the intent of re-use. Volunteers collected E-
Waste from homes and nearby vicinities and handed over to the BMC as
per directives from the University of Mumbai.
“Online Paper Bag Making activity”- Volunteers learnt paper bag
making via zoom session and made paper bags at home.
Training Programme for Volunteers to Combat Covid 19 - To unite
the community in the fight against Covid -19, the NSS unit brought
together a training programme to motivate and mobilize volunteers to

be ready to beat Covid- 19. Volunteers attended the Training Programme
to combat Covid 19 and for creating awareness among students This
was organized by the University of Mumbai.
Pledge on Covid-19 The student volunteers urged all the students to
wear mask, frequently use hand wash, to maintain distance and avoid
public gathering. Also urged the students to unite in the fight against
Covid -19, through collective determination and discipline. Volunteers
took an online pledge to combat Covid-19.
Online Cotton mask making activity As masks became the new
normal volunteers learnt how to make cotton masks via zoom session
and made cotton masks at home and prepared a video on the same.
Vaccination centre in collaboration with M.C.G.M -The college along
with Aditi Puri Charitable Trust setup a MCGM covid vaccination centre
in the Smt. Jyotsna Harshad Valia Conference Hall from 5

Internal Quality Assurance Cell,(IQAC) is a mechanism to build and ensure
a quality culture at the institutional level. The IQAC is meant for planning,
guiding and monitoring Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Enhancement

QUALITY INITIATIVES
Conducting Online Lectures on Zoom platform- Prof. Ms.
Dimpeshree Rajgor conducted a session that addressed the various
aspects and issues that may arise in online lectures especially while
conducting it on Zoom platform.
Investor Awareness Programme (IAP)- Mr. Neelratna Chowbal
from Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company conducted this
session to empower our staff in making informed investment
decisions and educate them on the role of mutual funds in the overall
portfolio of investments.
Competitions and Conference on Suicide Prevention in
association with Sister Living Works- IQAC in association with NGO
Sister Living Works co-hosted the 6th Annual Conference on Suicide
Prevention and the virtual Art for Change Competitions for Students
on the theme Suicide Prevention. The conference had eminent
speakers including famous psychiatrists Dr. Harish Shetty and Dr.
Anjali Chabbria. A number of events such as essay writing, slogan
competition and poster making competition were held as a part of this
activity.
Dant, Disha and Dasha- Webinar for Teaching and Administrative
staff was conducted by Shri. Mayank Solanki, Motivational Speaker
and Founder Chairperson of Val-Ed Initiatives. The session imparted
valuable insights and inspiration to the participants in having a
positive approach towards life.
Faculty Development Programme on Assessment of Online
Learning- Dr. Rukaiya Joshi’s interactive FDP for our college teachers
was very insightful and helped faculty members to be more innovative

for better outcomes.
An Intercollegiate Webinar on The 7 habits of highly effective
readers - Amrut Deshmukh known as the Booklet Guy in India, who is
on a mission ‘Make India Read’ conducted this session for students to
cultivate reading habits among the youth.
An Intercollegiate workshop on Peer Team Visit (PTV)
Management Process- The IQAC and IQAC Cluster India jointly
organised an intercollegiate workshop for Principals, IQAC
Coordinators and administrative staff. The workshop had two
sessions, the first session by Dr. Namita Rajput, former Principal Sri
Aurobindo College was on ‘Verification of Qualitative Metrics’. The
second session was conducted by Dr. Bhalchandra Bhole, founder
member of IQAC Cluster, on ‘Interactions during Peer Team Visit’

COLLABORATIONS:
Linkages and collaborations with external agencies is an integral part of
quality enhancement. The college has the following collaborations
Indian Development Foundation-The students work closely with
Indian Development Foundation for various activities of community
outreach.
Antarang -The college has been in a collaboration with Antarang for a
Career ready soft skills training for enhancing employability of our
students since the last three years and the program has been
extremely successful.
Quick Heal Foundation-This foundation trains our students to become
cybersecurity trainers who them impart this knowledge to school
students. The college students who become trainers also get a stipend
from Quick Heal Foundation.
Jeevitam- The college had collaborated with this Tech Enabled
Livelihood Platform and students seeking employment can register on
their portal and get access to various placement opportunities.
Technoserve-The college has a collaboration with Technoserve as part
of their Campus to corporate program and get training in core
employability skills as well as placement.

The college endeavors to achieve continuous quality enhancement and
some of the future plans for the year 2021-22 are:
Undertake energy audit, environment audit and green audit and
implement the recommendations.
